Tom went above and beyond to build what I wanted. Custom color, schoonover spider. After playing my new large body birch for a week, I am really getting the modern open sound I was looking for. Deep growl on the low end, sustain and clear all over the neck. This reso is capable of what ever sound you want. He nailed the color combo I was looking for. I received my large body, laminated birch with sunburst in Dec 09. (I thinks is mug shot is the one on the right on the home page). The picture does not do the guitar justice. It looks great in the picture, but is really pretty in person. I was overly impressed when I opened the case for the first time. Soundwise? No thin, tinny ( Is that a word?) tone here. It has the modern sound that others,costing 5-8 times as much have. A great instrument at a fantastic price for a handmade USA instrument. I bought toms solid curly maple large body and am very happy with the craftmanship of this guitar. I told tom I was looking for a more modern sounding guitar than my old rq jones, and this maple is just what I was looking for. A couple of months ago, I was looking to upgrade from an entry level instrument I'd started with. However, I couldn't "break the bank" in doing so. I started doing some research and figured I'd end up with something along the lines of a Beard GoldTone. Then, Tom contacted me and said he could build one for me at a comparible price. I saw some pictures of his work and read a few other testimonials and decided Appalachian was the way to go. It was really neat to be involved in the design and choice of finish and to see it progress as Tom sent me pictures at various stages of completion. Now I have something that is uniquely mine AND sounds absolutely fantastic! I hope more people consider small builders like Appalachian. Steve Hudson Player
